The instructors provided will be highly experienced in the technical subject and either be working towards the recommended level 4 trainer qualification or will have already achieved this or higher.

Signal Maintenance Testing Handbook Core

Who should attend
This course has been designed for delegates who are required to undertake Signal Maintenance Testing in accordance with the latest Network Rail Standards and Instructions.

Delegates should have a sound knowledge of railway signalling and be capable of reading diagrams. In addition to this it is expected that delegates will have working knowledge of multimeters, insulation testers and have completed a Basic Signalling Two course or equivalent.

On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:
  • Carry out defined tests as documented in the Signalling Maintenance Testing Handbook
  • Document and apply all relevant procedures
  • Ensure they are working to the correct up to date documentation
  • Understand standard SMTH Terminology
  • Know the limits of their authority

In addition, delegates will be competent to carry out:
  • Wire Counts
  • Temporary labelling of wires
  • AC and DC Earth Testing
  • Insulation and Continuity Testing
  • Cable Function Testing

Following this course delegates will be able to progress onto the additional SMTH modules including Aspect Testing, Points Detection and Correspondence Testing if they wish.

Learning approach
40% Theory with pro-active scenarios to assist the delegate with understanding the principles of SMTH.

60% practical sessions with demonstrations and delegate time to practice and reinforce the theory session.

Both theory and practical assessments must be completed and an appropriate pass mark achieved before a certificate is issued.

On successful completion of all theory and practical assessments delegates will be issued with an SMTH card which will need to be authorised by the delegate's Manager.

The delegate must have attended a Basic Signalling Two course or equivalent or have extensive railway signalling experience and trackside knowledge.

Delegates should also have attended a SPWEE training course.
