Who should attend

This course is designed for SMTH testers who are likely to undertake Signal Failure Investigation.

Objectives

On successful completion of the training course delegates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of:

  • Part 5 of the SMTH Handbook
  • the escalation procedure
  • how to prioritise the collection of information and record the evidence gathered
  • how to classify a fault
  • setting up the serious incident procedure
  • escalating the procedure to the correct personnel
  • confirming the fault has been found
  • repairing the fault and signing the equipment back into service

Learning approach

60% theory based using PowerPoint presentations, demonstrations, scenarios and open discussions.

40% practical based carrying out signal failure investigations in a practical area completing all the required steps in Part 5 of the SMTH Handbook.

Both theory and practical assessments must be completed and an appropriate pass mark achieved before a certificate is issued.

On successful completion a certificate will be forwarded to delegate's employer. This can be used with the employer's competence management system to determine the level of competence appropriate to the individual delegate.

Pre-requisites

The delegate should be an SMTH Tester and have an extensive knowledge of the railway signalling industry.
