Basic Signalling Technology (BST)

Who should attend

This course is designed for engineers, project office staff and managers who require knowledge of the railway signalling principles and the technical issues that are associated with them.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course delegates will have a basic understanding of the following:

  • Basic railway signalling diagrams including track plans, scheme plans and location diagrams
  • The principles of signalling relays
  • Point machines, signals and AWS principles
  • Track circuit principles including bonding, location design, construction and testing principles
  • Power supplies, signalling cables and basic terminations
  • Interlocking principles (RI and SSI)

Learning approach

The majority of this course is classroom-based with visual aids, PowerPoint presentations, drawings and some practical demonstrations. On some occasions a visit to a local station or short train ride will highlight some extra features.
A theory assessment will be used to verify the delegates understanding.

Pre-requisites

A basic understanding of railway terminology and principles.
PTS would be a distinct advantage.
