Release of Controls

Number of Delegates: 6

Duration: 1 day

Location: Horsley Cross

Who should attend

This course has been designed for delegates who are required to liaise with Signalling Operations staff for failure of or work on signalling equipment, Module TS11 of the rule book.

Delegates should have a sound knowledge of railway signalling equipment.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of safety critical communication
  • Understand the meaning of release of controls and know how to complete the relevant paperwork
  • Differentiate between work that will not affect the normal passage of trains and work that does affect the normal running of trains
  • Understand and acknowledge how to deal with failure of signalling equipment
  • Know where to look within the rule book to resolve problems and issues

Learning approach

This course is 80% theory based with pro-active scenarios to assist delegates’ understanding of the principles of Release of Controls and liaising with operational staff.

Theory and practical scenario assessments must be completed and appropriate pass mark achieved before a certificate is issued.

Pre-requisites

The delegate must have a good understanding of signalling principles and ideally would have attended Basic Signalling One/Basic Signalling Two.

For Release of Controls to be added to SMTH cards, an SMTH course and relevant mentoring must be completed.
